Each company has a different task.  We respond to every different type of emergency.  Here's a summary of what they do: After reading all of the different types of companies, check the Companies page to see where you want to join.

Engine Company- "Stretches" Hose lines from a hydrant to the fire and from the truck to the fire itself, actually extinguishes the fire, ranging from a garbage fire, all the way to a house or building fire or a car or truck fire. Engine work can be very labor

intensive but without this component, the fire doesn't go out.

Ladder Companies-Sounds plain and simple. But there's more to it. The Ladder

Companies are responsible for Raising Ladders whether it's ground portable ladders,

the Aerial ladder or tower ladder.  They also are responsible for searching for victims and also locating the fire. They are the best access for the engine company to extinguish it.  Their job still isn't done, they also are responsible for forcible entry at various incidents, roof and window ventilation and then they have to take all the ladders down and secure the scene.  If you like heights and have your adrenaline rush then this is the company for you, The Ladder, or Truck companies as often referred to are usually the first ones into the building and often go in without the protection of a hose line.

Rescue Company- Rescue's job is a multi tasking job. They mainly support the Engine and the Truck Companies at Fires, but also are responsible for Hazardous Materials Incidents, ranging from spilled fluids at a car accident, to controlling a leaking propane tank or a leaking fuel tank from an auto or truck, Vehicle Extrication is also a main function of Rescue, whether it be Up righting an overturned auto to extricating persons pinned or trapped in an auto, they also extricate persons stuck in elevators or escalators or any other confined spaces.  Rescue members are also trained in Rope Rescue Techniques, as well as specialized Rescue of victims trapped Above or Below Ground. Rescue operates 2 Ambulances to transport sick and injured patients to the hospital, and every member becomes certified as a New York State Emergency Medical Technician at no cost to them.  Rescue company requires more training then the Engine or Ladder Members, but several Engine and Ladder members are trained in some aspects that Rescue is.  If you like a variety of "work" as its commonly called in the Fire Service, then this is the place for you.
